Biography

Juan Felipe Baene, a Colombian-qualified lawyer, holds a special interest in the intersection between public and private law, both within the national and international legal spheres.

Before joining the MIDS, he worked as a law clerk at the Council of State, Colombia's highest court for matters concerning public administration. During this time, he drafted decisions on diverse legal aspects, including contract and tort law, arbitration clause interpretations, procedural rulings, and annulment of arbitral awards. His professional experience involves disputes in areas such as infrastructure, energy, trade, expropriation, human rights violations, and overseeing the regulatory scrutiny of administrative actions.

Moreover, Juan Felipe gained experience in project finance and asset-backed financial transactions during his tenure as an associate at Brigard Urrutia, Colombia's leading law firm. Notably, he participated in finance deals related to Colombia’s most extensive road program to date.

Juan Felipe completed his LL.B. degree at the Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, graduating among the top ten in a class of 262 students in 2016. Furthermore, he pursued a Postgraduate Degree in Public Administration Law from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. During his undergraduate years, he served as an academic tutor, providing guidance in the areas of law of obligations and private international law. He also participated in an investment arbitration moot court competition in Washington D.C., where his team secured third place in the general rounds and received an honorable mention for the respondent’s memorandum.

Beyond his legal pursuits, Juan Felipe enjoys various interests, including history, political theory, classical music, opera, cinema, and cooking.
