Biography

Batuhan Betin holds a LL.M in Energy and Natural Resources Law from Queen Mary University of London where he graduated with the highest overall grade in his cohort. His dissertation was a recipient of the coveted 2021/2022 Lord Browne of Madingley Energy and Climate Change Law Essay Prize. In 2022, he attended the Hague Academy of International Law’s Summer Course on Public International Law as the Emmerich de Vattel Scholar.

Before joining the MIDS, Batuhan interned at the European Space Agency where he assisted the public international law division in advising the agency concerning the suspension of its cooperation with ROSCOSMOS. In conjunction to his internship, he was also employed as a research assistant focusing on public international law, environmental law, and energy law. Prior thereto, Batuhan was a trainee with the in-house legal department of Orange Business Services, where he was, inter alia, the single point of contact for the negotiation of all data protection matters. Alongside the MIDS, Batuhan now serves as a law reporter for the Oxford Reports on International Law in Domestic Courts.

Batuhan has published on the use of substantive rules of law in petroleum arbitrations in the Journal of World Energy Law and Business (Oxford University Press); and has reported on various contemporary developments implicating international humanitarian law, the use of force, and aviation law on EJIL:Talk! (The Blog of the European Journal of International Law). He has also undertaken speaking engagements on various matters of public international law at the European Society of International Law, the European Centre for Space Law, and the Bar of England & Wales.

Batuhan is an accomplished advocate, having won five domestic moots in the United Kingdom and was an oralist for the winning team in the 2021 World Championships of the Manfred Lachs Moot Court Competition where he had the distinct pleasure of practicing advocacy before judges of the International Court of Justice. He has judged various national rounds of the Philip C. Jessup Moot Court Competition and has volunteered as a coach for the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition.
