Biography

Smrithi is an India-qualified lawyer with extensive experience in international economic law and treaty negotiations. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in law (B.A. LL.B. (Hons.)) from Gujarat National Law University, India in 2019. She is a recipient of the J.N. Tata Scholarship to pursue her studies at the MIDS.

Prior to joining the MIDS, she worked for four years at the Indian government’s Centre for Trade and Investment Law, New Delhi, where she advised on trade and investment law issues.

Smrithi has significant experience in treaty negotiation and was a part of India’s negotiating team for several of its free trade agreements, where she focused on Environment, Labour, Sustainable Development and Investment Protection chapters. Apart from treaty negotiation, she has advised on WTO disputes involving India, and on the compatibility of Indian trade and investment policy with its international obligations. She has also been involved in the development of novel regulations for specific sectors, such as logistics and chemicals.

She enjoys legal research and writing and was a part of studies on the impact of Investment Protection Agreements on investor behaviour, special economic zones, and carbon border adjustment measures. She has published several pieces of academic writing as articles in journals, and chapters in books.
