Biography

Mario Mérida is a Guatemalan qualified lawyer with over five years of experience in international investment arbitration and human rights litigation. He holds a JD from the University of San Carlos of Guatemala and a Master's degree in Corporate Law from Rafael Landívar University.

Prior to joining MIDS, he was the head of the International Affairs Unit of the Office of the Solicitor General of Guatemala, where he directed the State's defense strategy in proceedings before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and the organs of the Universal System for the Protection of Human Rights.

He also represented the Republic of Guatemala before the ICSID Rules and Regulations Amendment, the Working Group III of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the Working Group on Investment Arbitration and International Commercial Arbitration of the Latin American Association of Offices of State Solicitors (ALAP) and the United Nations Human Rights Council.
