Hanwool is a lawyer admitted to the Korean bar. He worked as a legal expert for the International Legal Affairs Division in the Ministry of Justice, which represents the Korean government in Investor-State Dispute Settlement cases. He specialized in the analysis of domestic and international law related to ongoing investment arbitration cases under ICSID or UNCITRAL Rules. He participated in the negotiations of investment chapters in several FTAs. He attended the 37th session of UNCITRAL WGIII meeting on ISDS reform and wrote the Korean government’s submission to the 38th session. He was invited by the KCAB to sit as a co-arbitrator in the 13th and 14th FDI Moot Asia-Pacific Regional Rounds.
Hanwool holds B.A. in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and J.D. from Yonsei Law School. As a law student, he participated in the Vis East Moot and FDI Moot. He served for a year as a research assistant to Professor Joongi Kim, providing assistance in the research of his book, International Arbitration in Korea (Oxford University Press, 2017), a comprehensive analysis of the Korean court’s decisions on arbitration-related cases on set-aside and enforcement of arbitral awards.
